Can AI read a trading chart?
The short answer
From a screenshot, not reliably. An independent test in April 2026 found AI vision models called the direction of a chart correctly about 51% of the time, which is close to a coin flip. They named the right candlestick pattern in 1 of 215 tries, and how confident they sounded had almost nothing to do with whether they were right.
“If the prompt is too vague, the answer can sound very confident but still miss what I actually mean.” (a trader, private message)
Why screenshots fail
A chart image is a picture of numbers. The model has to guess the prices from the pixels, guess where the levels are, and guess what you meant by “this”. Every guess adds error, and the model is trained to sound sure anyway.
It also does not know you. It does not know which setups you trade, which ones you skip, or what happened the last five times you took this one.
What works instead
AI is good at two things here: understanding what you mean, and writing the exact calculation for it. The trick is to let it do those and nothing else.
- You point. You draw a box or a line on the chart, or say what you see.
- The AI writes the check. It turns “is this a sweep of the morning low?” into a precise rule.
- Code does the maths on real prices. The rule runs on the actual candles, not on a picture of them.
- The answer comes back as a chart. The level, the move past it and the close are drawn where you can see them.
This way the AI never has to read a number off an image, and every claim it makes can be checked on the chart.
What it looks like in practice
On 8 October 2026 gold dipped under its morning low of 4114.48 and bounced. Asked “is this a liquidity sweep?”, a chart copilot working from the data can answer: yes, the low was 4110.05, 4.43 under the level, and the 15-minute candle closed back above at 4115.44. Then it can show every other time that happened.
That is the idea behind Fortuna: you talk to the chart, and the chart talks back in charts.
Questions
Can ChatGPT analyze a trading chart screenshot?
It can describe what it sees, but its calls on direction and patterns from screenshots have tested close to random. It also does not know your strategy or your past trades.
What is a chart copilot?
A chart copilot is an AI assistant that works on your trading chart: you ask about what you see or draw, and it answers using the chart's data, ideally by drawing its answer on the chart.
Why does AI need the price data rather than an image?
A picture loses the exact numbers. Measuring how far price moved past a level, how many times a pattern happened, or what it cost to trade needs the real prices, not pixels.
